The European climate service Copernicus said the Earth just sweltered through its hottest month on record in August. Scientists said the heat surge is mostly due to human-caused climate change, with help from a strong El Nino. The globe and the United States have set records for the hottest Northern Hemisphere summer and August. The world averaged 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit last month, tying the all-time global mark set in July 2023. This surpasses the threshold set by the 2015 Paris climate agreement of an increase in global warming of no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Scientists say fossil fuel emissions are the main cause and so it’s going to keep getting hotter.
