For years, scientists have explored ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere, including through direct air capture, changes to ocean chemistry so seawater can absorb more carbon and reforestation. Now, researchers are experimenting with breeding crops to grow deeper root systems that could store more carbon underground while helping plants withstand drought and other climate stressors. With an $18 million Bezos Earth Fund grant, researchers at the Salk Institute are field testing deeper-rooted soybeans to measure how much carbon they store, how long it remains in the soil and whether the approach can be scaled up.
